Kinosuite Secret Cinema — A hidden storytelling gem in the heart of Jakarta.

In the bustling streets of South Jakarta, nestled among the vibrant urban life, lies an unassuming hub of creativity that has quietly but profoundly reshaped the local cultural landscape. As I meandered through the energetic streets of Blok M, the city’s pulse surrounded me. The scent of street food mingled with the sounds of motorbikes zipping by, creating a sensory experience that was both chaotic and invigorating. It was my last night in Jakarta, and I decided to venture out alone, hoping to discover something fascinating to share back home. My quest for a drink led me to a lively compound called M Bloc Space, where an underground bar, somewhat empty, caught my eye.

Intrigued and seeking some clarity (HAHA), I stepped inside, feeling a bit out of place as the only foreigner in sight. Suddenly, Out of nowhere, a vibrant figure in a delicate batik robe emerged from upstairs, warmly welcoming me with flawless American English. With his long stormy hair and infectious charm, he whisked me upstairs. Behind the curtains awaited a hidden surprise: dozens of people sat in hushed fascination, utterly captivated by a clandestine cinema experience.

Little did I know, this was my serendipitous introduction to Julio Rionaldo, his secret garden, and Jakarta’s underground independent cinema world. Rionaldo, an Indonesian raised in California, has brought together a unique blend of cultural influences to create an indie motion picture ecosystem that has been making waves both locally and internationally.

Discovering Kinosuite, Parcstar Assembly Inc., and Jakarta’s Underground Cinema

Kinosuite’s crowd comes from all walks of life, from students to aspiring writers, to professional actors. You never know who might be sitting next to you until you say hello.

The organization behind this charming Secret Cinema, Parcstar Assembly Inc., Established by the visionary Julio Rionaldo and his colleagues, operates out of Jakarta but boasts a unique incorporation in Newark, Delaware. The enterprise specializes in producing unique narrative features, shorts, and series for an international audience. What sets them apart is not just the distinct quality of their work but the profound impact they have on the communities they engage with.

During my stay, I had the privilege of attending one of the screenings of Kinosuite International Film Festival, held in the lively district of Blok M. The festival, is a testament to the power of storytelling and the cultural significance of independent cinema. As I wandered through the festival grounds, I couldn’t help but be struck by the sense of camaraderie and creative energy that permeated the air.

Kinosuite’s charm lies in its low-budget setting, which only adds to its authenticity and appeal. The festival eschews the glitz and glamour often associated with major film festivals, instead opting for a more grassroots, down-to-earth atmosphere. Makeshift screens set up in intimate venues, the flicker of projected films against weathered walls, and the eclectic mix of seating arrangements — from pillow seats to simple sofas — all contribute to a unique and immersive experience.

What truly sets Kinosuite apart from the rest of other film festivals I went to is the enthusiasm of the crowd. Audience members eagerly engage with filmmakers during Q&A sessions, asking thoughtful and probing questions that reflect their deep appreciation for the art form and their craft. It’s a place where you might find yourself sitting next to a writer, an actor, or a designer without even realizing it, as everyone blends seamlessly into the environment. The informal setting fosters a sense of equality and mutual respect, where the focus is solely on the love of cinema and the stories being told.

As I watched films and participated in discussions, I felt a profound connection to the community. The festival was not just a showcase of films but a celebration of the collaborative spirit that drives independent cinema. It was in this environment that I truly grasped the impact of Parcstar Assembly Inc. on the local cultural landscape, and the role of Kinosuite in nurturing and showcasing the incredible talent that Jakarta has to offer.

The Role of Innovators: Those Who Dare to Challenge the Status Quo.

From left to right: Amarl Al-Kautsar; Sulthan Yassar; Julio Rionaldo; Fadhil Abhimantra; and Farhan La Galigo. Jakarta’s indie film movement pioneers and the innovators behind Kinosuite and Parcstar Assembly Inc.

Meeting Julio was a lovely experience, we both share the same backstory of coming from South East Asia and being raised in the States. We shared a lot about the things we find in common, especially about storytelling. Julio embodies a unique blend of cultural influences which defines his work. He describes his approach as “magical neorealism,” a style that seamlessly blends the extraordinary with the mundane to create deeply personal narratives that resonate with universal truths.

Julio’s presence exudes a quiet confidence and an infectious passion for storytelling. His eyes light up when he talks about film, and it’s clear that every project he undertakes is a labor of love. “We believe that great stories have the power to change lives,” Rionaldo shared during our delightful conversation. “Through our films, we aim to reflect the complexities of the human spirit and the beauty of our cultural heritage. By doing so, we hope to inspire, provoke thought, and foster a deeper understanding of our shared humanity.”

Rionaldo’s aspirations are deeply rooted in a desire to give voice to untold stories and to shine a light on the diverse tapestry of human experience. He speaks of his work with a sense of mission, not out of arrogance, but from a genuine belief in the transformative power of cinema. “It’s about creating a space where people can see themselves and their experiences reflected on screen,” he explained. “We want our audience to feel seen, to feel heard, be a part of something and to know that their stories matter.”

Julio Rionaldo’s films are a testament to his commitment to this vision. Each narrative is crafted with care, weaving together elements of Indonesian culture and universal themes in a way that feels both specific and broadly relatable. His unique approach to filmmaking — merging the magical with the real — allows him to explore existential themes in a manner that is both profound and accessible. As he continues to push the boundaries of indie cinema, his work stands as a beacon of creativity and cultural expression, embodying the very essence of what Parcstar Assembly Inc. strives to achieve.

Experiencing “King of Swords”

King of Swords (2024)

One of the highlights of my trip was watching “King of Swords,” a film produced by Parcstar Assembly Inc., starring emerging talent Sulthan Yassar as the main protagonist. This film delves deeply into the concept of “Olah Rasa,” a mentally challenging stage rehearsal technique secretly taught in Indonesia’s radical theater and acting schools. The narrative explores the fatalism of ambition, the nature of power, and the relationship between authority and freedom, all through the lens of its protagonist, Reyes, an actor undergoing an “Olah Rasa” session against Guido, his ruthless film director.

Reyes’ journey is a harrowing exploration of ambition’s darker side, as his encounters with Guido challenge and reshape his understanding of himself and his craft. The film’s powerful depiction of these themes is epitomized in its devastating eight-minute psychological-drama single long take. This scene is a masterclass in tension and emotional depth, capturing the raw and transformative nature of “Olah Rasa”.

The film’s use of dimmed lighting and dark scenery beautifully mirrors Reyes’ inner turmoil and his eventual grasp of a complex peace. Each frame is meticulously crafted to reflect the intense psychological landscape Reyes navigates, making “King of Swords” a powerful reminder of the transformative nature of great cinema.

The Long-Term Impact of Kinosuite International

The Kinosuite International Film Festival is more than just a showcase of films; it’s a platform for emerging talents and a celebration of cultural diversity. During the festival, I met Ayu, a young woman from Jakarta’s suburbs, whose eyes sparkled with the passion of a true storyteller. Ayu shared her journey with me, recounting how the films she watched and the relationships she forged at Kinosuite inspired her to pursue her passion for filmmaking.

Ayu’s voice trembled with excitement as she described the moment she decided to turn her dream into reality. “I always loved stories,” she said, “but it wasn’t until Kinosuite that I felt like I could be the one telling them.” She spoke about the encouragement she received from other filmmakers at the festival, how their words and support ignited a fire within her. Fast forward a couple of months, and Ayu directed her first short film, which was later showcased at the very festival that inspired her. “Seeing my film on the screen was surreal,” she confessed, “it was a moment that validated all my hard work and reinforced my belief in chasing my dreams.”

Her story is just one example of the ripple effect Parcstar’s initiatives have on local communities. Ayu’s journey from a passionate observer to an active filmmaker underscores the importance of a supportive environment in fostering and nurturing dreams. Kinosuite functions as a networking hub for emerging filmmakers, providing a space where they can connect, collaborate, and grow. This sense of community is integral to the festival’s ethos, as it brings together individuals from various backgrounds, each with their own unique stories to tell.

Parcstar’s commitment to inclusivity and collaboration is evident in their philosophy. They provide an inclusive space for diverse creatives to collaborate and innovate, fostering a community that transcends boundaries. Ayu emphasized how this environment not only enriches the cultural fabric of Indonesia but also empowers individuals to tell their own stories and contribute to the global dialogue. “A place like Kinosuite gave me the confidence to believe in my voice and the courage to share my story with the world.”

Reflecting on the Journey

As I prepared to leave Jakarta, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for the work being done by the folks at Parcstar Assembly Inc. Their films and initiatives are not just entertainment; they are catalysts for change, fostering empathy, understanding, and connection. By showcasing authentic and meaningful stories, they are contributing to a richer tapestry of human experiences.

Parcstar’s journey is encapsulated by their motto, “Ad Astra Per Aspera,” meaning “To the stars through hardships.” This phrase embodies the unrelenting human spirit for progress and the belief that even the most challenging paths can lead to extraordinary destinations. Through their dedication to storytelling, Parcstar Assembly Inc. is navigating the unknown cosmos of the indie film industry while illuminating the way for local communities to thrive and flourish.

As I boarded my flight back home, I carried with me the stories and experiences of those I met in Jakarta. The power of independent cinema, as championed by Julio and Ayu, is a testament to the transformative potential of great storytelling. It is a reminder that through the magic of cinema, we can explore the depths of the human spirit and find our way to the stars. No matter how far nor how long it may take us there.
